Reward & Reminder Program
The Reward & Reminder Program will take place under the Drug Free Communities Support Program Grant whose goal is to reduce substance abuse among youth and establish and strengthen collaborations.
The goal of the Reward & Reminder Program is to ensure that merchants are not selling alcohol and tobacco products to underage youth in order to reduce the use of these harmful products by minors. The program rewards merchants who don’t sell tobacco and alcohol products to underage youth and educates those who do. The long-term results of this program include: merchants “doing the right thing”, helping merchants stay out of trouble with the law and bringing the community together to save the lives of their youth.
The Prevention Coalition of Monmouth County members and youth will go out in teams. Youth will visit stores and try to purchase tobacco and/or alcohol products. If the clerk stops sale, the clerk and the store are praised and rewarded. If the clerk continues the sale, the youth will terminate the sale and the clerk will be educated by the adult volunteers and the store will receive additional signage as a reminder to id youth before completing future sales. All data is logged and the stores are revisited in two months by a different team. If a store is found to not be in compliance several times, then the Health Department is notified.
